Surf and Turf

Since the early 2000’s my family and I have taken part in the CFB Trenton Surf and Turf. It’s a cool little race put on by volunteers from the air base usually early in June. It’s a weird race comprising of 8 legs completed by teams of up to 9 members, teams of 2 (Tin Mate), or single athletes (Tin Man). The 8 legs are as follows: 7.5k run, 4k canoe/kayak, 25k road bike, 5k trail run, 10k mountain bike, 7.5k road run, 500m pool swim, and 3.5k run. For years we would enter a team and I always did the road bike. For years I struggled to complete the 25k bike without having to stop going up the steeper hills. In 2012 when I began getting into proper shape at 52 and started looking at Ironman racing, I started entering this race as a Tin Mate. I’ve completed 4 Tin Mate races, the last one this past Friday. Usually the first or second week in June can be warmish but not this year. This has been an unusually cool spring. Last Friday was cool (good) but very windy (bad). My wife as part of a sisters Tin Mate team dumped in the kayak but was rescued and able to continue. Of the last 4 Tin Mate races I’ve completed, 3 have been with my sister-in-law’s husband Richard Wiens. He has been the perfect teammate because he’s fit, fast and willing to let me bike and run! I usually complete the first and last runs plus both bike legs. I feel that the biking stuff is my strength but my running is improving. As I get older, I seem to be getting faster. The last 2 races I’ve completed as a fat adapted athlete and I’m still seeing benefits. I drink a small amount of Superstarch and the rest of race nutrition is salt and water. This plan is working better and better for me, love it! My next race is 3 weeks away, the Muskoka 70.3 Half Ironman (with Diane!). Wish us luck!

On a completely separate note, this morning I came across this arcticle. Have a read and tell me what you think.
