Summer 2012 I was an overweight unhealthy pilot. Not very active, just walked the dogs every other day. My wife of more than 35 years had been running and participating in triathlons for years, was fit and I was quite proud of her. With her help I began a learn to run routine fall 2012. By late summer 2013 I’d lost 15 or 20 pounds, was very happy with my progress feeling pretty fit.
Then in Aug ’13 it happened. My wife who had completed her first Ironman in Lake Placid in 2012 had just finished volunteering at Ironman Tremblant and was sitting in front of her laptop signing up for IM Tremblant 2014. I looked at her and asked “Do you think I could complete IM Tremblant with you?” She said “How the hell would I know?” Lol, she recommended I ask her coach and training friends what they thought. I signed up! The most terrifying moment in my life!
Fast forward to fall 2017. Now I had completed 2 full distance Ironman races and a 70.3 with a smattering of sprint races. My next race would be IM Lake Placid 2018. At one point I figured that as an Ironman athlete with the massive amounts of training I was doing, I should be able to eat anything I want to my hearts content. Soon found out how wrong this thinking was.
While prepping for IM Chattanooga 2016 I noticed I was gaining weight. Consulting with my coach I decided to track and restrict my calorie intake. This seemed to work but took willpower and left me hungry (all the time). I thought this just a fact of life, deal with it! Then something cool happened!
